TAMPA - Tampa Electric Co. said it may shut off power to downtown Tampa's central business district, Davis Islands and Harbor Island as early as Friday morning in anticipation of Hurricane Charley.
The utility company said the move would prevent underground equipment from being damaged by the storm and the accompanying floods. The company also said the move would let it restore power to customers as quickly as possible.
TALLAHASSEE - Governor Jeb Bush said Floridians should brace for Hurricane Charley, expected to sweep through Tampa Bay Friday, warning residents to take the storm ``very, very seriously.''
Bush and state forecasters said residents should spend Thursday preparing for the hurricane, which could be classified as a Category 3 hurricane by the time it hits Friday.
The biggest threat posed by Charley is that it's likely to move inland and travel throughout Florida, forecasters say. The last time that happened was Hurricane Donna, called Deadly Donna, which ravaged Florida in 1960.

Pinellas County leaders are ordering 350,000 residents to evacuate their homes as Hurricane Charley heads toward Tampa Bay.
