stats blowup
<<October 02, 2003 - Thursday, 6:31 pm>>

My statistics class today was CRAZY. It's actually called something like Applied Quantitative Business Methods, but it's really just statistics.

But anyway.. Today, we spent a whole hour getting nowhere. Our instructor dropped the news on us that he accepted another job and would no longer be able to teach during our regular time periods for the class. So we spent the entire hour trying to figure out an alternative schedule that would fit everybody's needs.

Of course, in a group of about 50 people, it was impossible. For any day or time we tried to work out, at least a handful of people wouldn't be able to make it because of work or class. Our instructor wasn't even being clear on when exactly he'd be available to teach. And he was letting everyone else take over and butt in with proposed solutions. There was no regulation or organized way of approaching this whatsoever.

A few people proposed, why not just get a new instructor? And that seemed like the perfect solution to me. Especially with what happened in the end.

As people were butting heads with trying to figure out a schedule, these two people, it looked like from SGA, asked to take two minutes at the end for some presentation or whatever. The instructor was nice about it, and they waited in the back of the classroom.

Disorganized and uncontained discussion continued. The idea was proposed of meeting only an hour a week. But then people were complaining about losing 2 hours of instruction time when they paid for 3.

Suddenly the professor blows up and starts yelling. He reminded us that we were only getting two hours a week to begin with since the class agreed to helping him out with leaving early so he can make it to another class he teaches at a different college. And he's yelling, and yelling.. and saying that this is "bullshit."

I'm just sitting here thinking.. 'oh really..'

Obviously this is not an instructor willing to cater to students needs. Obviously he has much more important concerns..

As this was going on.. One of the girls up front who was kinda taking charge of the situation said to the presentation people waiting in the back, "Hey, wait a minute. Are you taping this??"

He did have a video camera on him, but he said he wasn't taping. And then she was making accusations, "It looked like you were taping" and "Are you trying to get him fired?"

And then it got really ugly, and the instructor was yelling at the two presenters, asking them to wait outside, and then it turned into "don't come back."

The girl was like, "We won't come back. Holla atchya."

But.. omigod, man.. Completely unprofessional.. That really made me uncomfortable.. And I really hope we do end up getting another professor. Cuz that was fucking ridiculous.
